Personalised presents at Christmas are the ones that really get the biggest smiles and mean the most to your loved ones, even after the tree comes down in January. They are thoughtful, sometimes funny and always heart-warming. If you are thinking of combining your love of photography with a gift this festive season, look no further than turning one of your images into a beautiful canvas print. Family timeHow often have you managed to get an image of everyone together? The whole family in one place and spending some quality family time? Take the opportunity this Christmas to take lots of photographs – especially in the run up to the big day. The product of your efforts could be an excellent gift for relatives as a keepsake of this time. It doesn’t have to be a Christmas-themed image, it could be a candid shot of everyone around the dinner table or a day out at the local park. Pinterest is a great place to get some inspiration, helping you to create the perfect setting for your photoshoot. Getting personalMany people will not have had the experience of being the star in their own photoshoot. A camera pointed straight at you as you work the angles god gave you to give the best shot; a snapshot in time of how you look to keep forever. This could be the perfect present to give. An afternoon with all attention focused on them, plus a chance for you to test out your portraiture skills. You could even shroud the finished images in secrecy until you pick your favourite, do your editing and present the photograph to them for Christmas. They’ll be dying to see what it looks like! Read our post on portrait photography: the wonder of the human face for some top tips. Four-legged friendsA portrait of a pet is so thoughtful. If you can capture the personality of that furry friend – looking serious, being playful or just sleeping off a heavy meal – you’ll have captured a moment in time. Just imagine your friend or family member’s face when they unwrap your gift and see the face of their cat, dog or other animal staring back at them. A real tug on the heartstrings… We love working with animals and have put together a couple of guides to getting the most from your pets when photographing them. Check out ‘purrrfecting cat photography’ and ‘Could your pet be an Instagram star?’. You can go several routes with this one: an action shot of them running in the park or mid-jump, a close-up portrait to capture every whisker and the twinkle in their eyes, or even a picture you have taken of owner and pet looking content. How to celebrateWhat better way to celebrate this day – or any day where you feel the men and boys in your life need some attention – than by using your camera to make a fuss of them. Whether this is in the form of an individual photoshoot, where all the attention is focused on them; a family photograph to celebrate the strong bond of family; or even a day out where you can capture candid photos of your nearest and dearest. Your favourite image (or images) can then be turned into a canvas print to be treasured in your home, or even as a gift to the man or boy I question. Another route to go down, is giving the fella being celebrated a camera as a gift to start them on their own photography journey. It could turn into a life-long passion that can help them through tough times as a way to let out creativity and work through some issues. The war between iPhone and Android still rages on, with both sides making colossal profits with each new device. The most important thing for us photography nerds is the camera. How good is it? How easy is it to use? What cool new features could make photography on the go so much better? Here we look at the pros of each device to help you choose which one is best for taking beautiful imagery. iPhone 8The iPhone 8 – released in September 2017 – is ‘formed from glass’ and boasts a 4.7 inch Retina HD display. Apple says that the new display is more beautiful than ever, with True Tone, 3D Touch and a wide colour gamut. True Tone – This technology automatically adjusts white balance to match the light around you, said to give a better viewing experience in all kinds of environments. Wide colour gamut – as well as this feature, the iPhone 8 has the ‘best colour accuracy ever’ from the company, making everything look more brilliant and vibrant. For viewing your images, the phone has dual-domain pixels that give you a great view of the screen from almost any angle. It also comes with a new sensor that is larger and faster than previous models, a new colour filter, deeper pixels and an optical image stabilisation for photos and videos. The iPhone 8 has a 12 MP camera. Portrait mode gives sharper backgrounds and more naturally blurred backgrounds depending on what you want from your image. The dual cameras and facial landmarking are said by Apple to ‘create dramatic studio lighting effects’ in portrait mode. Samsung Galaxy S8The S8 has front and rear cameras that Samsung says create photos that are bright and clear even when there’s very little light. Apparently, what you see is what you get in the shot. Fan of the selfie? The S8 comes with Smart Auto Focus so that your faces – or the faces of the people you’re trying to fit into one shot – will be in focus every time. All your selfies will be crisp and clear because of ‘enhanced multi-frame processing’. The front camera on the S8 is 8MP while the dual sensor camera is 12MP. The Dual Pixel sensor, bright lens and wide aperture work together to focus as quickly as your eyes do so you can capture the moment. Use the shutter mode to take multiple shots that will be then combine into one ‘high-quality’ photo. Pro mode on the S8 allows you to adjust the shutter speed, ISO, exposure, manual focus, colour tone and white balance. Make full use of the Galaxy S8 and S8+’s superior camera performance by turning on Pro Mode. The phone even has food mode! This feature brings out the most in your lunch, dinner or dessert for ‘mouth-watering results’. Check out the Parrot Print post about the best food photographers to follow on Instagram.
