As with portrait photography, focusing on the lips can bring some really striking results, especially if you can master the detail involved. Once you have found a willing lip model, you must decide what kind of look you are going for and suitably prepare. Will this be glam with lipsticks and glitter galore? Or will this be a photoshoot focusing on a bare and natural look? The choice is yours. Famous lipsClose-up photography of lips has been used on several occasions to promote a brand, usually with very popular results. There’s something about human lips that just appeals to the masses! Here are a few of examples: Kylie’s lip kit Kylie Jenner, famous because of the Kardashian family, released her own make-up line starting with a lip kit that really got the attention of buyers. Her lipsticks and glosses have done phenomenally well, due in part to her excellent branding – a pair of lips with lip gloss dripping from them. Jenner is currently being sued by artist Sarah Pope for copying her artwork. Ministry of Sound The Ministry of Sound albums have been using lip photography to promote its ‘I Love…’ series including I Love Summer, I Love Reggae and I Love Garage, even using video footage of lips dressed in all kinds of textures and colours, as shown in this video. Orange Is the New Black Created by Netflix, Orange Is the New Black is a television series that has catapulted in popularity. It’s opening sequences show a series of women’s lips in all shapes and sizes. Here, the focus is less on perfection and more on reality, the reality of prison life. The devil is in the detailFor this type of photography, which hinges on capturing lots of detail, you will need a model who is willing to stay still as well as a trusty tripod or stand that you can take steady photographs from. You need to skin surrounding the lips to be as indistinctive as possible to really bring out the texture and colour of the lips themselves. Once you have all the shots you think you’ll need, it’s time to head to the editing stage to make your image as crisp and sharp as possible. All imperfections, shadows and lighting issues can be corrected here with programs such as Photoshop. This guide from f stoppers is sure to get you on the right track if you need any guidance. When the winning image is selected, you can turn this into a very arty and professional-looking canvas print to be hung on the walls of your home, or as a great gift for someone special. The world of photography is all about experimentation. Changing up your lens, using a completely different camera or trying new techniques is part and parcel of expanding your experience as a photographer. With that in mind, have you tried 360-degree photography? Put simply, this type of photography is about creating beautiful panoramas, capturing all 360 degrees of the view. How to create a 360 imagePhotographer Joe Reifer, when speaking with Digital Trends, described how he tackles a 360 image: “Panoramas in 360 degrees can be shot with anything from an iPhone app to a digital SLR. The most common way to get a nicely blended, 360 panorama with reasonable resolution is to shoot with a DSLR and fisheye lens on a panoramic head. Wide-angle lenses can also work well if you don’t have a fisheye, but usually require shooting and stitching more images. While handheld 360s are possible, using a panohead on a tripod or monopod makes stitching the resulting images a lot easier.” Have you ever captured a landscape shot and realised how much you missed behind you? Just think of how much more you could fit in with a 360 image. New from FacebookFacebook has recently updated its mobile app for both IOS and Android with support for capturing and sharing 360-degree photos. No extra hardware is needed either. We’ve been able to upload and view 360 photos since May last year on Facebook but only through other devices, but now this can all be done through Facebook. Facebook says that the feature has been rolling out worldwide so to keep a lookout for your ‘360 photo’ option. He is also founder of 360cities.net, described as the world’s largest panoramic photography platform, as well as creator of Sphericam – a 360-degree video camera. Talking about all things 360, he says, “Panoramic, 360, gigapixel, and aerial (quadcopter, drone) photography is fascinating because of the way it extends the human senses. With these tools, it is possible to see vast distances, to see everything at once, and to feel like you’re flying.” Will Pearson Large-scale 360 photography and panoramic imagery is the interest of photographer Will Pearson, based in London. In terms of panoramic photography, Will blends extremely high resolution images together to make canvas prints that can reproduce at large scales. While keeping in mind this year’s interior must-haves for the dining room – including vintage furniture, interesting light displays and nature prints – you can also explore what photographs to display in this room. Canvas prints can become a piece of art and what better room to place it when the only distraction is good food and good conversation. Keeping it in the familyDo you have some adorable photographs of the children that need a prominent place to be displayed? Maybe memories of an awesome day out that brings a smile to your face? Take the opportunity to use one wall as a family collection, filled with images of your nearest and dearest including good friends and treasured pets – past and present. Read our recent post on getting children interested in photography to inspire the little ones to create their own canvas prints. They will be proud as punch to see their photographs hanging on the wall! Food, glorious foodIf you’re are an avid cook and partial to some food photography, you could adorn your walls with your favourite images of mealtime. Think of a delicious bowl of fruit, perfectly positioned or a decadent dessert such as a chocolate sundae with all the trimmings. It could be as simple as a bunch of carrots or even a photograph of a banquet table packed full of yummy treats. Are you a gin aficionado? Maybe you make a mean frozen daiquiri? Read our post on drinks photography tips to perfect mouth-watering photographs of alcohol. Mother NatureAnother idea for the dining room is to take inspiration from nature itself. Head out to the garden to see what is blooming and taking shape; could your next print be a beautiful rose? How about a climbing ivy making its way up the house? Even a lovely bright sunflower would look amazing in print. Do you and your family have a favourite scenic landscape? It could be a quaint coastline, a cobbled street that brings back memories or even an exotic place you ventured to on holiday. The nature genre also extends itself to animals too. Imagine a series of canvas prints capturing your favourite creatures, what would you choose? Whether you decide on elegant giraffes eating leaves from tall branches, man’s best friend playing with a ball or even the surprisingly trendy sloth doing very little, they are all excellent choices to symbolise the diversity of Mother Nature. Were you very little or did it creep up on you over time? Imagine getting you little ones into using a camera and documenting what they see – what could be more rewarding? Here, we look at ways to get them excited about this creative art form. Either as something they take up seriously or just a few skills to take away with them. Cameras for beginnersAlthough this might seem obvious, you shouldn’t be giving your child a £2,000 SLR to play around with. There’s too much at stake and they would just be so confused about all the bells and whistles (different lenses, buttons etc)! When choosing a camera for your child, bear in mind that simplicity is key to getting them confident behind the camera. Lifewire recently put together a list of the best cameras for children, which includes durable models that are easy to use – and don’t cost the earth! You can also give them an old camera of yours to play around with. Pique interestTo show children the best that photography has to offer, you need to provide some interesting subjects and landscapes. Do you have a favourite coastal seascape? A pretty park close by? Maybe the family pet could become the subject of choice? A petting farm is an excellent choice of location for the little ones who love animals. You could even create a collage of the best images from the day as a canvas print for the bedroom. A nice little project could be taking new family photographs. Perhaps a new family portrait taken by your child, or new portraits of each member. Having a project – a goal – is always helpful to keep momentum with a hobby. Check out our post on creating a vision board for your next photography project. Go retro!Going back to simpler times, you could purchase some old-school photography items for fun. A wind-up camera is great for a cheap way to play around with photography, as well as helping with patience as you eagerly wait for the results to be printed. Can you remember when you’d put the film in to be processed and the cheapest option was a week wait? How times have changed. Another great option is a polaroid camera. Recently, these cameras have had a resurgence, becoming very popular at weddings, for social media and novelty purposes. A notice board could become home to several of your little one’s polaroid attempts. A few tips to getting polaroid photography right include:
